Let's talk about one of my all time favourite and best selling collections; Sea.
I live with my family on Barry Island, we are extremely lucky to be surrounded by the sea and reap the multitude of benefits that it brings. On the days when everything feels like too much, a visit to the beach is the most perfect escape.
The soothing sound of the waves somehow manages to transform the mind to stillness, leaving all of the chaos behind and finding a restored sense of clarity. Whether we find ourselves enjoying an abundance of effortless movement provided by nature, diving through the waves and climbing the rocks, or just sitting. It always feels good.
Sea therapy
Have you ever wondered why a visit to the sea makes you feel so good? Theres actually a science to it.
Large bodies of fast moving water produce negative ions, also known as anions - they are molecules with a negative electrical charge. As water molecules collide and break apart in churning rivers, plummeting falls or crashing waves, negative charged ions are produced. These negatively changed particles are believed to have various potential health benefits including improved mood, reduced stress and increased energy levels.
Some studies suggest that negative ions may improve cognitive performance, increased mental energy and alertness. It is this very reason that lead me to using rosemary essential oil in celebrating the revitalising effects of the sea.
Rosemary essential oil
Rosemary oil is distilled from the familiar, highly fragrant green-grey shrub with dainty blue flowers. Rosemary oil has been used throughout known history, and appears in all old herbals. It has long been recognised as a plant that can enhance memory by enlivening the brain. A tonic at best, it's a stimulant, it banishes mental lethargy and when applied topically it is analgesic which means it can help with aches and pains, rheumatism, arthritis and migraines.
Rosemary essential oil is distinctive in my YNYS AROMA 'Sea' blend, the aroma is sharp and fresh, reminiscent of the bracing sea. But it's relevance to the sea doesn't stop there...
Studies show that inhaling rosemary essential oil can help cognitive function, including memory and concentration.
How rosemary can support the brain...
- Stimulates blood circulation: Rosemary can improve blood flow, including to the brain, which may help deliver more oxygen and nutrients essential for optimal brain function.
- Interacts with neurotransmitters: A key compound in rosemary, 1,8-cineole, may help prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter critical for learning and memory.
- Reduces stress and anxiety: The aroma of rosemary oil may help lower cortisol levels (stress hormones), which can create a more conducive environment for concentration.
- Boosts alertness: Studies have shown that inhaling rosemary oil can increase feelings of mental refreshment and alertness, potentially reducing drowsiness.
The blending of 'Sea'.
The utter magic in my use of aromatherapy is all about the blending of essential oils, so of course I didn't stop at rosemary in creating this unique, layered and addictive blend called 'Sea'.
Synergy.
In essential oil blending, synergy describes the enhanced therapeutic properties achieved when combining two or more essential oils. The resulting effect is greater than what each oil could achieve on its own.
The goal of synergistic blending is creating a blend where the overall effect is more powerful, comprehensive, and ultimately more beneficial than simply using each oil individually.
I use seven essential oils, discovering synergy through the careful selection of each one to create a blend which positively transforms your state of mind and boosts your well being in a similar way to the sea. Some of which include:
Rose geranium is known for its balancing effects on the mind and hormones. It's beneficial to enhance mood by uplifting the mind from heavy thoughts, reducing tension and stress and promoting mental clarity.
Grapefruit is fresh, zesty and clean. It's a tonic for the mind, uplifting and reviving. Grapefruit oil helps with both mental and physical lethargy, low mood and stress.
Cedarwood gives an earthy edge to the blend, encapsulating that ozone effect from damp, salty rocks blanketed in seaweed. It provides a sense of grounding which can help you feel calm and relaxed.
