FAQ's Wax Melt Edition

FAQ's Wax Melt Edition

Lets chat everything about wax melts...

What is a wax melt?

A wax melt is made using a base of wax and either essential oils or fragrance oils. Some makers also add colours, glitters or dried botanicals. I make YNYS AROMA wax melts using coconut and rapeseed wax with pure essential oils and some natural dried botanicals.

How do wax melts work?

The wax melt will be placed into the top dish of a wax melter / oil burner with a tea light underneath. The heat from the flame of the tea light will melt the wax, and its fragrance will gently be released into the surrounding atmosphere. Once all of the fragrance has evaporated from the wax, it can easily be removed from the wax melter and replaced with a new one.

How long do wax melts last?

I'd recommend using the regular 4hr burn tea lights for your wax melts. YNYS AROMA wax melts are highly dosed with pure essential oils to produce a strong fragrance for two uses. The fragrance will start to dilute after approximately 8 hours of use for each wax melt.

How do I change the wax melt?

Once your used wax melt has solidified and cooled, remove it from the burner dish ready to replace it with a new one.

Depending on your burner, you might easily be able to push the wax out. If not, light a new tea light and wait a moment for the wax to begin melting, just a little. Then you will be able to slide the old wax out of the dish more easily. You could also scoop the wax out with a spoon.

Are wax melts pet friendly?

Mostly yes, but there are some important things to consider.

Store your wax melts away from pets. They smell great and we don't want anybody mistaking wax melts for tasty treats. While YNYS AROMA wax melts are made from naturally derived ingredients, the consumption of a large amount of wax could cause an upset stomach. Use your wax melts away from pets. By that, I mean out of reach! When in use the wax will reach a high temperature which could burn if it gets spilled onto yourself or your pets.

Wax melts are safe to be used around animals, however - just like us humans, animals can have sensitivities too. If your pet shows unusual behaviour during or after using any kind of scented or aromatherapy product, monitor them closely and be cautious about using that particular product again.

Are wax melts child friendly?

I personally wouldn't use synthetically fragranced wax melts around my children but I do use YNYS AROMA wax melts which are made with pure essential oils on a daily basis. It's always best to stick to naturally derived ingredients around children, and yourself too!

I'd actually recommend using my aromatherapy wax melts for your children! Particularly the Nos da wax melts or Moon wax melts. They contain calming essential oils which will help your kids wind down at the end of the day, reset their nervous system and help make bedtime a lot more relaxing.

Use the same safety precautions as above to avoid your kids mistaking wax melts as tasty treats and keep them out of reach when in use to avoid spilled hot wax.

Essential oils vs fragrance oils...

Essential oils are naturally derived ingredients - they are organic compounds which have been extracted from the flowers, leaves, roots, grasses and barks of plants. Essential oils don't just smell great but they have therapeutic benefits to support our health and wellbeing.

Fragrance oils are synthetically produced in a lab. It is possible to find fragrance oils which smell like pretty much anything and everything. Buttery croissants, fruit cocktails, even pink fairies. You name it, I'm sure theres a fragrance oil for it! While some are pretty harmless, others carry quite serious cautions. During my research before launching my business, I read a lot of safety data sheets from various fragrance oils which declared health cautions ranging from skin irritation to miscarriage. Seriously!

Now, essential oils do have safety precautions too. Natural doesn't always necessarily mean safe. If you have underlying health conditions, or if you are pregnant its best practice to check with a professional before using essential oils, particularly in their pure form or with direct contact to the skin. * My products such as wax melts, candles, diffusers etc have been diluted to a concentration which is safe to use in most cases.

Are wax melts better than candles?

This completely comes down to personal preference. Wax melts tend to fill a room more rapidly with fragrance, where as candles are a slower burn (pun intended). This is because the pool of melted wax is where the fragrance is released from. When burning a candle, the surface of the wax gradually melts outward from the wick. As the pool of melted wax grows wider and deeper, the fragrance will be released more quickly into the atmosphere - meaning the fragrance intensifies gradually over time. When using a wax melt, the entire wax will melt more quickly due to the intense heat rising up from the tea light flame. This causes the fragrance to be released more quickly into the atmosphere.

Some people think that wax melts are stronger smelling, but this is not the case. Wax melts fill a room more quickly than candles, but candles last longer.

What are the best wax melts?

YNYS AROMA, of course! thats what the customers say anyway.

What do I do with the leftover wax?

Some people have told me they use leftover wax to make DIY fire lighters. It could also be used for other craft projects where wax is involved. Or, with YNYS AROMA wax melts, you can pop them into your food waste or compost bin (Coconut and rapeseed wax is biodegradable).
